Off the Cuff
dream of being a hunting guide attracted Jeff Miller to Alaska, and he still finds time for excursions as president of Cruz Construction. Miller started swinging a hammer as a carpenter’s assistant in Oregon. He tried studying medicine, but he recalls, “I really liked doing what I’d been doing to pay for college.”
Miller put in time as a project engineer at Wilder Construction and then joined Cruz Construction. He confided to founders Dave and Dana Cruz that he wished to run his own firm someday, so they cut him in as a third owner. Miller says, “Dave’s the best mentor you could ask for. I still talk to him half a dozen times every single day.”
Jeff Miller: Anything in the Alaska outdoors with my three kids and my wife.
AB: Is there a skill you’re currently developing or have always wanted to learn?
Miller: I would like to be confident at the piano.
AB: What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
Miller: Guiding sheep hunts… You’re usually taking people that aren’t from Alaska when you do this, so you’ve got their lives in your hands.
AB: What are you superstitious about?
Miller: Depends what sport I’m playing… My sport of choice these days is hunting, so I have a particular knife that was my grandfather’s in my front-right pocket… No matter what I’m doing, I’ve got a “Dumbo-crow’s-feather” type thing.
AB: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
Miller: Turkey Red.
AB: Dead or alive, who would you like to see perform live in concert?
Miller: Kenny Chesney.
AB: What’s your greatest extravagance?
Miller: My coat collection. I have a coat problem… Alaska winter outdoor jackets: when I find a good one I like, I’ll buy a couple.
AB: What’s your best attribute and worst attribute?
Miller: My intensity… It’s got to be regulated to not be overwhelming to those around ya, but if you work really hard and be intense, you can get a lot of things done.
