Off the Cuff
old treats for Alaskans seemed nutty, eleven years ago. Elissa Brown recalls, “It felt like the punchline to a joke, to our friends from Outside.” Since then, her Wild Scoops kitchen has become a keystone in Anchorage’s craft dessert scene. “We’ve helped open the door to other ice cream businesses,” says Brown.
Building community was her goal, after experimenting with recipes as a middle school science teacher and studying experiential learning during a research fellowship in Norway. Brown says, “Ice cream is the perfect vehicle for showcasing different ingredients that also tell the story of the place where you are.”
Elissa Brown: Anything outdoors… Running, biking, skiing.
AB: What’s your greatest extravagance?
Brown: I have a good number of bicycles, and I feel like I could still acquire more.
AB: What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
Brown: After I graduated college, I led a self-supported bicycle trip across the USA with a group of teenagers… Getting lost, finding our way… We started in Georgia and ended up in California.
AB: What are you superstitious about?
Brown: I have some lucky ice cream socks if I need a little luck that day.
AB: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
Brown: Palmeira [Tropical Fusion], Turkish Delight, and Everest Restaurant.

Brown: ABBA in their heyday.
AB: Is there a skill you’re currently developing or have always wanted to learn?
Brown: My daughter started learning violin recently, and it made me want to also learn violin or fiddle… I do play banjo, and I’ve been working on getting better.
AB: What’s your best attribute and worst attribute?
Brown: My best attributes are my open-minded creativity and limitless positivity… For worst: too much open-mindedness can slow decision making.
