Alaska Business Business Profile
Global Services, Inc.
Celebrating forty years as Alaska’s full-service remote camps and catering company
E

stablished in December 1982, Global Services, Inc. has reached a major milestone that few businesses achieve: The full-service, remote camps and catering company has proudly served Alaskans for forty years. “It’s exciting,” says President Monika Perry. “The industry and Alaska have changed a lot in forty years—but serving people in remote areas hasn’t. We keep doing what we do, and it has worked.”

Global Services—founded by Kurt Winkler, Monika’s father—recently implemented a key leadership transition. Last year, Monika took the company’s helm after serving as its operations manager for ten years. Kurt remains involved in a limited capacity. “My dad is my advisor,” she says.

Today Global Services is employing a unique perspective as a woman-owned business to build on its tradition of delivering high quality, flexible services throughout Alaska. The company has completed major projects for clients ranging from BP and ConocoPhillips to Emerald House, Great Bear Pantheon, Cruz Construction, and UAF. Global has operated successfully on the North Slope, Cook Inlet, Prince William Sound, the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, and the Aleutian Islands. “Forty years brings a lot of experience,” Monika says. “There is not a part of Alaska that we have not been in as a company.”

CREATIVE, COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS
As a hospitality-driven enterprise, Global specializes in providing delicious and nutritious food, highly skilled employees, and clean camps—all of which are essential for maintaining high employee morale and welfare. However, making remote camp facilities operate efficiently requires a strategic compilation of products and services working together to meet clients’ broad needs. Therefore, Global also provides important ancillary services, including product procurement, light maintenance, expediting, and emergency response. “We want to provide the best quality, so our clients can focus on their project and we can support them,” Monika says. “Working in remote Alaska is a tough duty. At Global, we want to be our clients’ bright spot at the start and end of a hard day.”

The logistics of delivering services in Alaska’s isolated regions can be challenging. “You have to be creative and find solutions to please your clients—and take care of your employees—while keeping services professional and cost-effective,” Monika says.  Being resourceful and adaptable has enabled Global to satisfy clients’ requirements while remaining competitive.

“It’s being able to find new solutions on the fly,” she explains. “You grow with the clients and find out what they need.”

EXPERIENCED EMPLOYEES
Monika ascribes Global’s long-term success to its most valuable asset: experienced employees. Many staff members have been with the company for ten-plus years, and its key management personnel—all of whom have lived in Alaska—have extensive North Slope and remote camp experience. “We like having the best people working for us and providing a lifestyle that keeps them here,” Monika says.

For the next forty years, Global Services will intensify its efforts to provide high-caliber solutions for clients and a positive working environment for its employees. Monika says, “We want to continue to diversify, expand, and grow with Alaska.”
